Common reasons teens turn to alcohol:
Changing schools can create new pressures in their peer group. Whether the change is due to graduation or a move to a new area, it requires a significant adjustment. Making new friends, taking new classes, and getting good grades all challenge a child’s self-confidence. When drugs are readily available, it’s hard to say “no”.
A desire to fit in. All children and teens have a desire to fit in and a fear of failure. Following the crowd – even if they take drugs – is seen as an easy way to be included. Many children will do what it takes to be accepted by their peers.
Family changes have an impact too; a new brother or sister, a divorce, or new partners for parents can create inner turmoil.
Children and teens have an urge to experiment and experience new adventures.
About Marijuana:
Recent teen drug abuse statistics show that 20% of 8th graders have tried cannabis or marijuana. More than 60% of teens said that drugs were sold, used, or kept at their schools.
